The church of Surdesti is one of the eight wooden churches of Maramures listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A Cyrillic inscription located above the entrance states that the church was built in 1766, and with a total height of 72 m, Surdesti ranks among the tallest traditional wooden church in Europe.

The church belfry is entirely built in wood and its 54 m height confirms an old belief that the taller the church tower was, the easier their prayers could reach up to Heaven. Besides the impressive height, Surdesti is the only church of Maramures with a double-eaved roof going all around the church. A row of windows between the two eaves and the two superposed rows of arches above the porch are unique in the region.
